The ChocALM project is a research project supported by the University of Exeter and in collaboration with Exeter Advanced Technologies, however we are currently looking for a suitable sponsor who can help to support the project.

What we can offer

Fab@Home printing with chocolate
Fab@Home printing with chocolate
We are working to develop a low-cost device which can fabricate 3D objects from chocolate, using a technique increasingly used in the manufacture of engineering prototypes. Potentially this project will result in a device which could be installed, easily and cheaply, into retail stores for the creation of custom-made, while-you-wait novelty gift items. This could be used to make objects from a custom library of varied designs, which are otherwise not feasible to create and stock in-store, or could be used to create 3D photocopies of existing objects or models.

It is intended that the ChocALM project will be a multi-year project, and that this year (by mid-2008) a first working prototype will have been designed and manufactured.

Why we need help

We would like help on two different levels:

We need to understand the material characteristics of different types of chocolate in order to tune the manufacturing technique to the characteristics of the material. We would be happy to receive help from people working with chocolate in manufacturing processes to better understand how to manipulate the chocolate, whilst retaining its taste and texture.

Whilst we are supplied with funding from the university, to successfully complete this project we will require further support to meet our required budget for materials for manufacture of the prototype.

Further information

If you would like additional information regarding the project, or how our project could help you, please see 'The Team' page for contact details.
